You may be asking yourself, do I really need to take engagement photos with my wedding photographer? And the short answer is YES! We 1000% believe doing an engagement session is so important and there are so many reasons! Here are our top six reasons why...

1. Helps you and your love get comfortable

We hear it all the time, “I feel so awkward in front of the camera” or “I don’t know how to pose” or even “we’ve never had professional photos taken before,” and it’s okay to feel that way. Honestly, we’ve felt that way before too because portraits can seem daunting. This is why this is our number one reason as to why we encourage all of our clients to have an engagement session before their wedding day. It’s a way to get rid of your camera jitters and any worries you may have. We promise we will do everything we can to help make you feel comfortable and our goal is to have you feeling confident by the end of the session. When your wedding day finally arrives, the practice from your engagement session will have you feeling that same confidence during your wedding portraits.

2. Let’s all of us get to know each other

This point is closely related to getting you comfortable in front of the camera, but it also focuses on our relationship! We strive to get to know all of our clients on a personal level. If we’re being honest we want your friendship. If we have a close relationship and get to know each other beyond us just being photographers and you being our clients, it makes the session fun and more comfortable. Even though we chat over the phone with you, having the time during an engagement session gives us the opportunity to officially meet rather than introducing ourselves to you on your big day. When we head into your wedding day as friends, it allows us to jump right in to capturing your love without any hesitation or stress.

3. You learn our process and style and we learn what’s best for you

We know that you like our work (at least we hope that is why you hired us!), but an engagement session will help you see how we achieve those final results. We like to have fun during all of our sessions. Be prepared for lots of giggles and silly moments because we will guide your portraits through our prompts. This allows us to capture a mix of both posed and candid moments between you two. We’ll of course capture your classic smiling-at-the-camera portraits and you’ll twirl in a field of flowers, walk hand and hand, and share lots of kisses. We absolutely love and want you to be yourselves and adore when your personalities shine through our prompts. Some of the poses can feel silly, but we promise they look good and always bring out the best smiles.

While we have our style and process for capturing your love, an engagement session not only lets you learn and become comfortable with it, but it helps us figure out which prompts work best for you. There are some poses that come more naturally to others, so we love finding the one that is perfect for you.

4. Engagement photos can act as many things for the wedding

We love an engagement session because the photos can be used for so many different things for your wedding day. Not only do you get to remember the emotions from being engaged and planning your wedding, but one option is that you can turn them into a book that can double as a guest book for your big day! Both of us actually did that for our own weddings, and it is such a special treasure to look back on. We’ve also been to many weddings where the engagement photos were framed and used as decor. Another great option for using your engagement photos is turning them into Save-The-Dates. This one gets a bit trickier because you have to plan accordingly to have enough time to print and send them, but they are always a beautiful way to tell people about your wedding day.

5. A good way to take in and remember your time as fiancés before the wedding

As cheesy as it sounds, you are only engaged for so long. There are so many emotions that you experience when you get engaged and start planning your wedding, so why not take a moment and breathe it all in. An engagement session really does help with that because you’ll have memories to cherish forever. On your wedding day, your guests can’t wait to see your dress and the decor, but during an engagement session, it’s all about your ring. We promise we won’t judge you for showing it off to us as much you want! We love admiring it too.

6. Best excuse for more pretty pictures with your loved one

What can we say, we are photo junkies. We honestly don’t think you need an excuse to get dolled up and get in front of the camera with your love. But if you need an excuse, an engagement session is the perfect one. There are so many important milestones and moments in your life, but getting engaged is one of the top ones on our list. There is nothing sweeter than witnessing your love for each other.
